A database of over 150 pedagogical works is helping integrate contemporary Finnish music into education. Published on Music Finland’s Composers & Repertoire platform, it features works by Finnish composers suitable for music schools, making it easier for teachers to find pieces that match students’ skill levels.

The database was created through collaboration between the Society of Finnish Composers and Music Finland. A survey by the Society’s pedagogy group Ääneni äärelle gathered over 150 works by nearly 40 composers. These are available on the CORE platform, searchable by category, composer, instrumentation, or year.

Skill level classification plays a key role

The works cover a range of student levels. Instrument teachers assessed each piece using a three-tier scale from beginner to advanced. This classification addresses earlier challenges, where some commissioned works proved too difficult for educational use, improving accessibility and practicality.

Each entry includes a skill level, a short description, and keywords describing its pedagogical focus. About half the works are solo pieces, with others including chamber music, accompanied solos, orchestral works, and vocal music. Most are for piano, with many also for string and wind instruments.

Encouraging open-minded exploration of contemporary music

The project also involved the Association of Finnish Music Schools and the 2025 Musica nova Helsinki festival, where students performed excerpts from the database.

An accompanying article highlights teachers’ experiences with contemporary music, noting that students respond enthusiastically to new sounds and techniques. The database aims to encourage this curiosity and support broader engagement with contemporary repertoire.
